PLDD, or Percutaneous Laser Disc Decompression, is a minimally invasive procedure used to manage pain caused by issues in the spine's nerves. This procedure is done with the patient awake, and it involves a small incision.
During PLDD, a tiny tube with a laser is carefully inserted into your spine under X-ray guidance. This helps the doctor precisely position the tube and assess the condition of the problematic disc. The laser is then used to relieve pressure on the disc, reducing discomfort.
One of the advantages of this method is that it doesn't interfere with the important structures in your spine, like the dural sac or the spinal canal. This means it's safer when working on higher parts of the spine or the spinal roots.
It's essential to understand that PLDD is a repair-focused treatment and doesn't strengthen the outer part of the disc. The laser mainly removes a small portion of the inner disc material, which reduces pressure in the disc. While the disc's overall volume decreases slightly, it can significantly alleviate discomfort.
